AB: Loranthus bengwensis is used in traditional medicine for its hypotensive properties. An aqueous extract (1.32 g/kg, p.o.) of leaves of L. bengwensis (collected from Nigeria) was administered to normotensive (NWR) and spontaneous hypertensive (SHR) rats for 8 days. A significant reduction in the mean arterial pressure in both NWR and SHR was observed. A significant reduction in the serum total cholesterol concentration was also observed on days 6, 7 and 8.
Other studies concluded similar results.
Here in Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay we have a related species Loranthus cuneifolia that I have tried in volunteers for high blood cholesterol control with no positive results.
